United States: Mpox has become a public health emergency, according to the latest announcement by the World Health Organisation (WHO). The statement was released by the health agency after the public health concern was raised at the international level.
It is to be noted that the outbreak, linked to the disease, has reached at least 13 African countries, which started in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The cases linked to the infection could also be seen in some countries in Europe and Asia.
According to the CDC in Africa, the continent has reported an increase of 160 percent, and the deaths have increased by around 19 percent – if compared to the same time in 2023. As per the reports shared by the WHO, as many as 14,000 cases and 524 deaths have been reported in Africa in 2024, until mid-August. Besides this, while elaborating on the concerning trend, the international health agency also mentioned that around 96 percent of the cases and deaths have been reported in DRC alone, according to ajmc.com.
According to the official reports, the recent outbreak has been reported. The nations that were earlier unaffected are also affected, including Burundi, Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda. As per the data revealed by Africa CDC, as many as 2863 cases and 517 deaths have been reported in the continent, but the suspected cases have reached up to 17,000. The health authority has outlined it is a significant hike from 7146 cases in 2022 and 15,000 cases in 2023.
The official press release from Africa CDC outlined, “This is just the tip of the iceberg when we consider the many weaknesses in surveillance, laboratory testing, and contact tracing.” Another outbreak was announced by the WHO two years ago.
It is to be noted that a warning has been issued by the US Health Authorities, just a week before the announcement by WHO, regarding the threat of mpox to Americans. According to the health advisory, the severity of mpox among Americans remains low, but doctors must maintain a “heightened more severe suspicion for mpox,” especially among those who have traveled to the affected regions, as reported by ajmc.com.
What does this outbreak mean for Americans?
It is to be noted that most of the cases of mpox found in America are not life-threatening, but certain cases do possess a high risk of illness. The infection is critical among the younger population and people who have immunocompromised systems.
The most common transmission of the virus is through direct contact with infected animals or by touching contaminated objects or surfaces. The CDC has asked Americans to avoid close contact with people who are infected with mpox to reduce the chances of spread.
While explaining the same, MD, professor of medicine at Yale School of Medicine – Richard Martinello outlined that a very small level of mpox is circulating in the US, but the residents and citizens must be aware of the outbreak.
Martinello was quoted saying, “This could quickly change as it did in 2022, so it is important for people to be aware. Transmission of mpox does seem to require close skin-to-skin contact, so this is not a situation where persons need to change how they use, for example, public transportation,” as per ajmc.com.
The health authorities are concerned because mpox is also found in wastewater across the country. According to the CDC’s recent data, the detection level is high in wastewater from California and Illinois, where intermittent detection is between one percent and 80 percent.
US Providing Aid to African Countries!
According to certain reports, HHS has announced that it will be offering aid of around USD 17 million in preparedness and response support to Africa. Along with this, America is planning to donate around 50,000 doses of the Jynneos vaccine to the DRC.
