United States: A virus that causes Bluetongue is spreading across the world, and now health experts are worried that it could reach the United States, increasing the threat. Recently, following a rapid increase in the number of infections in Europe, the virus has been prominently seen in the UK.
According to health experts, the virus is prominent among farm animals and could even result in death. The infection could be transferred to humans, but it has been reported that it is not dangerous, according to Sky News.
Recently, the first case in the UK has been reported in a single sheep near Haddiscoe in South Norfolk. The case is counted as the first case of the 2024-2025 season. To decrease the chances of transmission, a control zone of around 20 km has been declared around the Norfolk premises.
The Spread in Europe!
The health authorities of Europe recently outlined that the world could see a new strain of the virus named BTV-3. The authorities mentioned that there was a “high probability” of the emergence of the strain. The anticipated was done in May – the time when the disease was largely spreading across Europe.
According to official data, the uptick and rapid increase in cases was reported in the Netherlands and Germany. Along with this, new cases were reported in Denmark, France, and Luxembourg, as reported by Sky News.
During the current outbreaks, the virus has been affecting livestock, including cattle and sheep, along with goats, deer, and llamas.
The symptoms seen among the animals dealing with the infection could be blue and swollen tongue, fever, reduced milk yield, and, in most severe cases, the animal could die due to the infection.
What experts have to say?
The Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer of the United Kingdom – Ele Brown, mentioned that the authorities must properly check their animals, and any suspicious activity must be reported to the Animal and Plant Health Agency. The expert made the announcement on Monday.
Following such an outbreak, the authorities have allowed free testing for animals that are moving to and from the highest-risk counties.
Previous Severe Outbreak!
According to the details, the bluetongue infection caused an outbreak in the 2023-2024 season, when the health authorities reported around 199 cases. The cases were reported between November 2023 and March 2024 – a time span of five (5) months, as per Sky News.
Out of the total, 119 cases were reported among cattle, and around seven cases were seen in sheep. During the season, the most high-risk areas were Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, East Sussex, and Kent.
