Concerning: 270 Potentially Exposed to Tuberculosis in US

Health officials across the United States are on high alert after a student tested positive for tuberculosis (TB), potentially exposing up to 270 individuals to the infection.

United States: As many as 270 people have been possibly exposed to tuberculosis in the United States. The concerns have been raised across the nation after one student tested positive for the infection and has contacted 270 people after contracting the infection.

The local health officials have stated that all the people will be tested for TB as early detection of the infection is critical. The Public Health has issued a letter to the parents of the children who have been exposed to the infection. The letter has appealed to the parents to get their children tested. According to recent reports, Public Health is providing TB testing at zero cost for students who might have been exposed to the infection at Union County Human Services.

Reports have also claimed that the people who test positive for the infection will get no cost support or medication.

While addressing the concern, the health officials issued a news release that read, “Most people infected with TB do not become ill, as their bodies can fight the germs. This condition, known as latent TB infection (LTBI), is not contagious. However, without proper antibiotic treatment, LTBI can progress to active TB disease, which causes illness and can be contagious to others.”

The TB-tested student has been following precautionary measures for active pulmonary TB.

Public Health Director – Dennis Joyner mentioned, “While the community should be aware of this investigation, there is no immediate risk of health problems related to this case, and there is no further risk of exposure at this time.”

Joyner added, “Communicable disease investigation is a regular activity for Public Health, and our team is well-prepared to respond to situations like this to prevent further spread. We urge parents to have their children tested if they have been identified as close contacts.”

TB and its effect on the body!

TB is caused by bacteria, and the prime target for the same is the lungs. The mode of transmission is through air. According to experts, the disease spreads via coughs, sneezes, talking, or singing.

The health officials were quoted saying, “Those who inhale the bacteria may develop latent TB, which can become active TB disease if untreated. Approximately 10% of those with latent TB will develop the disease in their lifetime, while the remaining 90% carry the bacteria without symptoms.”

The health department has not released any information related to the infected student.
