United States: President-elect Donald Trump’s allies in the House GOP are paving the way for his ambitious endeavor to negotiate the acquisition of Greenland, adhering to his bold proclamation to secure the territory.
Representative Andy Ogles, a Republican hailing from Tennessee, is spearheading legislation that would formally authorize Trump to engage in negotiations with Denmark concerning the procurement of Greenland—a landmass geographically positioned in North America yet maintaining historical and geopolitical ties to Europe, according to Fox News.
Dubbed the “Make Greenland Great Again Act,” the proposed bill, as obtained by Fox News Digital, outlines the framework for such negotiations.
“Joe Biden has severely undermined our nation’s standing over the past four years. Before even stepping into the Oval Office, President Trump is signalling that the ‘America First’ doctrine is making a robust comeback. The era of subordinating American economic and security priorities is over, and House Republicans are fully prepared to support President Trump’s vision for the American people,” Ogles remarked to Fox News Digital.
The legislation stipulates that the incoming president may commence negotiations with Denmark promptly after assuming office at noon on January 20, as reported by Fox News.
“Within five calendar days of reaching an accord with the Kingdom of Denmark on the acquisition of Greenland, the President shall submit the agreement, inclusive of all associated documents and annexes, to the appropriate congressional committees,” the legislative text specifies.
Given that the U.S. Constitution vests Congress with fiscal authority, any acquisition must first secure funding through House appropriations and subsequent Senate approval.
The bill has garnered the endorsement of ten additional Republican representatives, including Mike Lawler of New York, Diana Harshbarger of Tennessee, Michael Rulli of Ohio, Dan Crenshaw of Texas, Anna Paulina Luna of Florida, Claudia Tenney of New York, Neal Dunn of Florida, Barry Moore of Alabama, Randy Weber of Texas, and Brian Babin of Texas, who is slated to chair the House Science Committee, according to Fox News.
Although Trump initially broached the concept during his previous presidential term, his recent rhetoric has amplified the notion, extending even to other assets such as the Panama Canal.
When questioned last week regarding his willingness to employ economic or military measures to secure such acquisitions, Trump declined to dismiss the possibility. “No, I won’t rule out either option,” he responded candidly.
The notion of acquiring Greenland has found favor among Trump’s Republican advocates, who emphasize its strategic location near Russia—a prominent adversary of the United States. Proponents argue that possessing Greenland is critical to bolstering national security interests, the reports by Fox News outlined.
Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., recently visited Greenland, purportedly for personal tourism purposes, further fueling speculation about the seriousness of the endeavor.
Ogles’ legislative initiative represents a broader effort among House Republicans to advance Trump’s foreign policy objectives. In a parallel move last week, Representative Dusty Johnson of South Dakota, head of the pragmatist House GOP Main Street Caucus, introduced a bill authorizing Trump to purchase the Panama Canal. While an earlier draft proposed acquiring the canal for a nominal USD 1, the finalized version omits a specified price, as per Fox News.
Such initiatives underscore the GOP’s readiness to facilitate Trump’s ambitious geopolitical aspirations as he prepares to ascend to the presidency.
