Experts Reveal Alarming Prevalence of Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria in Uncooked Meat and Dog Food

United States: The concerns are high among the healthcare officials and agencies associated with the E. coli bacteria. Recently, the health experts have outlined that the levels of the bacteria in uncooked meats and raw dog food has been spiked. 

Recently spike was seen in the UK, which has increased the threat in the United States also. According to the reports shared by the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Disease (ESCMID) Global Congress in Barcelona, the high level of E.coli has been found in uncooked meats and raw dogs food which is found in grocery stores. 

A thorough analysis conducted by scholars from the University of Bristol scrutinized 58 assortments of uncooked beef, chicken, pork, and lamb peddled at retail establishments across the UK, in conjunction with 15 assortments of uncooked canine victuals ended at “specialty pet stores,” as per a media announcement.

A staggering 81% of the flesh assortments and 87% of the canine victuals assortments were discovered to harbor E coli (Escherichia coli) strains that displayed resistance to antibiotics.

Among the uncooked chicken assortments, the levels of the resilient intestinal bacteria were most pronounced.

“E coli, an intestinal bacterium, has the potential to proliferate within cows and chickens destined for consumption, particularly when they are reared in unsanitary conditions or in close proximity,” elucidated Dr Marc Siegel, a clinical professor of medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center and a medical contributor for Fox News, in a conversation with Fox News Digital.

“Given that poultry and bovine livestock are frequently administered antibiotics to expedite growth and stave off infections, this contributes to the emergence of resistant strains, which thrive in the wake of antibiotic overuse.”

Siegel was not directly engaged in the aforementioned study.

“This investigation corroborates the prevalence of multiple strains of resistant E. coli in uncooked meat, frequently encompassing resistance to crucial antibiotics pertinent to human health,” declared the authors of the study in a press release from ESCMID.

In the event of ingestion, these bacteria could colonize the intestines and incite resistant infections, as elucidated by Matthew B. Avison, a professor at the School of Cellular & Molecular Medicine, University of Bristol, and one of the study’s authors.

“They can reside in your gastrointestinal tract for extended durations sans causing the disease, and in certain instances, the bacteria can precipitate various maladies subsequently, inclusive of urinary tract infections and bloodstream infections that have the potential to prove fatal,” remarked Avison to Fox News Digital.

“Infections triggered by resistant bacteria pose a greater challenge to treatment and are consequently more predisposed to exacerbate.”

Avison underscored that uncooked meat intended for human consumption subsequent to cooking is “frequently tainted” with antibiotic-resistant E. coli.

He expressed that the findings of the study were not unexpected, given the plethora of reports documenting the existence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in uncooked meat and several studies substantiating this occurrence in raw canine fare.

“In certain scenarios, these bacteria may induce diverse ailments later on, such as urinary tract infections and bloodstream infections.”

“People often harbor the misconception that freezing, which is employed in the marketing of raw canine fare, eradicates bacteria, but our research demonstrates otherwise,” disclosed Avison to Fox News Digital.

“We observed a commensurate prevalence of chicken-based raw canine victuals contaminated with resistant E. coli compared to uncooked chicken meat. Ergo, if you opt to feed your canine raw meat, you are effectively nourishing it with antibiotic-resistant E. coli.”

These revelations elucidate why earlier research has evidenced a pronounced correlation between the ingestion of raw meat by canines and the excretion of resistant E. coli by these animals, Avison emphasized.

The majority of individuals are oblivious to the peril posed by these antibiotic-resistant pathogens, as per the researchers’ assertion in the release.

They underscored the imperativeness of thoroughly cooking meat prior to consumption and adhering to “appropriate hygiene protocols” during meal preparation.

“Thoroughly cooking the meat will exterminate these bacteria,” advised Avison.

“Treat all uncooked meat as though it is contaminated with antibiotic-resistant bacteria and presume that canines fed raw meat will excrete such bacteria,” he continued.

“Adopt stringent hand-washing and hygiene practices to mitigate the risk of inadvertent ingestion of these bacteria by yourself and others.”

“If you opt to feed your canine raw meat, you are effectively nourishing it with antibiotic-resistant E. coli.”

Avison recommended that proprietors who opt for raw meat for their pets should meticulously dispose of their animals’ excreta.

“Refrain from allowing your canine to lick your countenance or share your sleeping quarters, and sanitize your hands following interaction with your pet,” he advised. “These practices epitomize common sense, yet assume greater significance if you opt for raw feeding for your canine.”

“And, naturally, treat raw canine fare as you would any uncooked meat, in terms of hygiene and sanitation practices.”

Siegel remarked that the study signals a “cause for concern,” underscoring the necessity of ensuring that poultry and meat are thoroughly cooked prior to human consumption and that canine fare is likewise cooked.

Andre Delattre, the chief operating officer of Public Interest Research Groups (PIRG) in Washington DC, articulated that the study “underscores the urgency of discontinuing the routine practice of administering antibiotics in animal husbandry.”

“An inevitable consequence of the overutilization of antibiotics is the development of resistance to these medications,” he apprised Fox News Digital.

“Studies have also demonstrated that meat sourced from animals reared sans antibiotics is less likely to be tainted with resistant bacteria.”
