United States: A health advisory has been issued by the Texas Health Department regarding the increasing number of cases of meningococcal disease. According to the reports, the cases related to the disease have been witnessing an upsurge.

The reports by DSHS have revealed that the region has been witnessing an increase in cases associated with invasive meningococcal disease since November 2023. The health authorities have mentioned that the highest number of cases linked to the disease have been found in the Southeast Texas region.

Along with this, the official data revealed that most of the regions of the state have at least one case associated with the disease.

How can meningococcal disease be explained?

According to the health authorities, the disease is caused by the bacterium – N. meningitidis. The bacteria can lead to serious illness and is contagious and severe because it spreads from an infected person to a healthy one through saliva or spit, according to the reports by kxan.com.

While addressing the infection, DSHS mentioned that the bacteria can cause meningitis – an infection that results in inflammation of the membranes covering the spinal cord and brain. The department has further emphasized that the infection does not spread through ‘casual contact’ or ‘breathing in the same air’ where an infected person is breathing.
