Scientists Just Found the REAL Reason You’re Conscious!

United States: For years, neuroscientific inquiry has centered around neuron firing—a cascade of tiny voltage spikes—as the primary mechanism by which the brain transmits information. These electrical pulses are posited to be instrumental in creating conscious awareness by facilitating communication, integration, and complex processing across neuronal networks. However, some experts suggest that consciousness might not be solely the result of neuron firing; rather, it may arise from the intricate electric fields neurons produce.

In conventional understanding, neurons interact by discharging neurotransmitters across synapses—the junctions that physically link them. Yet, an alternative form of neural interaction called “ephaptic field effects” exists, where the electric fields generated by one neuron subtly influence neighboring neurons’ behavior without the need for synaptic contact, according to boingboing.net.

There is remarkable evidence for this! In a 2019 study led by Dominique Durand at Case Western Reserve University, researchers found that even when a mouse’s brain tissue was cut into slices, communication still persisted across the fragment through field effects. And this is just one example.

In Scientific American, Tamlyn Hunt, a UC Santa Barbara scholar of consciousness and philosophy, references work by Walter Freeman, a revered neuroscientist from the University of California, Berkeley. In a 2006 paper, Freeman argued that conventional synaptic firing rates could not fully account for the cognitive speed he observed in studies on rabbits and cats, as reported by boingboing.net.

Another recent study, with authors including UCLA’s Costas Anastassiou and former Caltech neuroscientist Christof Koch, adds compelling evidence for the significance of the ephaptic effects. Their findings indicate that ephaptic coupling could indeed account for the “rapid coordination” necessary for consciousness “even without exceedingly fast synapses.”

This groundbreaking study could elevate ephaptic field science from the periphery to the core of neuroscience. Its revelations about the speed and pervasiveness of ephaptic effects may herald a transformative perspective on cognition and the nature of consciousness itself.
