United States: Feeling under siege from a tumultuous stomach, waves of queasiness, or persistent diarrhea? You might find yourself among the latest individuals struck by a gastrointestinal malaise that has left many in its wake over the past week and a half.
The Outbreak Task Force of the Putnam County Health Department is actively delving into an uptick of gastrointestinal afflictions connected to various gatherings across the county. According to Shanna Siegel, the department’s Public Health Educator, efforts are underway to pinpoint affected individuals in collaboration with event coordinators.
“Our team is working alongside organizers to trace potential cases,” Siegel stated. “If additional details become essential, we may reach out directly to those impacted.”
Siegel further elaborated that the prevalence of gastrointestinal infection isn’t isolated to the county but is also sweeping through the Hudson Valley region and across New York State. She emphasized essential preventative steps:
“We urge residents to remain home when unwell and adopt rigorous hand-washing practices to curb the spread. Such illnesses are highly transmissible. If you are grappling with nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, refrain from food preparation or handling for at least 48 hours post-recovery. Immediately sanitize affected areas and follow up with disinfection using either a bleach solution or an EPA-endorsed disinfectant effective against norovirus, a frequent culprit behind such illnesses. For severe symptoms, seek advice from your healthcare professional.
Comprehensive resources are available at [CDC Norovirus Prevention](https://www.cdc.gov/norovirus/prevention/index.html).”
The gravity of the situation has compelled Robert Cuomo, the director of Putnam County’s Emergency Medical Services, to issue a cautionary note to emergency responders. On Friday, Cuomo advised EMS personnel to exercise heightened vigilance, underscoring the importance of standard safety measures and the proper utilization of protective gear. “As we approach the holiday season, let’s all strive to stay healthy and safe. Please exercise utmost care,” he urged.
