Surprising Benefit of Regular Exercise Beyond Weight Loss Revealed

United States: Exercise isn’t merely about shedding excess pounds. A new study suggests it may also foster healthier fat.

“Engaging in habitual physical activity and exercising regularly over an extended period enhances the fat tissue’s capacity to manage surplus energy, especially during weight gain,” explained Dr Jeffrey Horowitz, professor of movement science at the University of Michigan’s School of Kinesiology, according to the reports.

To explore the effects of exercise on fat, researchers examined subcutaneous fat from two distinct groups of 16 individuals with obesity. One group had exercised at least four times per week for over two years, while the other group did not maintain a consistent exercise routine, as reported in the study published in Nature Metabolism.

Those with a regular exercise background exhibited fat cells with improved traits, such as more blood vessels, distinct protein structures, and reduced inflammation, Horowitz said.

Fat tissue beneath the skin having enhanced capacity is crucial. If a person gains weight, this fat should be stored there rather than in critical areas like the liver or heart, Horowitz added.

“Sadly, most of us, including consistent exercisers, tend to gain weight as we age,” Horowitz continued. “If our fat tissue can absorb that extra weight, less will migrate to organs like the liver or heart, where it can cause serious complications,” as per reports by CNN.

This research points to the need for more insight into fat tissue’s role in metabolic health and lifestyle adaptations, stated Dr. Andrew Freeman, director of cardiovascular prevention at National Jewish Health in Denver, who was not involved in the study.

“Being overweight might not tell the whole story,” Freeman remarked.

Enhanced Fat Tissue

Many instantly associate the term “fat” with negativity, but that perspective can be misleading, Horowitz observed.

“Fat tissue is actually essential for health,” he noted. “It serves as a vital reservoir for our excess energy.”

Previously, fat was seen merely as a storage depot for energy. However, Freeman explained that current research reveals that it serves multifaceted roles. “Having a modest amount of fat reserves is sensible, though not to the excessive levels seen in the average American,” he commented.

The goal isn’t necessarily accumulating more fat but boosting the body’s ability to store it where it belongs—under the skin. If it doesn’t settle there, it relocates to dangerous areas like the liver, heart, or pancreas, impairing their functions, Horowitz added.

Exercise Guidance

The core takeaway from the study is that maintaining healthier fat storage adds yet another reason to adopt a physically active lifestyle, Horowitz noted.

“We’re not modifying the exercise recommendations, but we are broadening the understanding of why staying active is beneficial,” he explained.

For those just starting, Freeman suggests trying morning workouts, according to CNN.

“Exercise can be a natural stimulant, much like coffee,” he said. There’s no need for expensive gym memberships, either.

“There are countless ways to exercise, and integrating it into your daily routine, so it becomes second nature, is the most important step,” Freeman added, as per CNN.

The aim is to engage in 30 minutes of intense physical activity daily, where you’re genuinely exerting effort. But even starting with a simple walk around the block is a step in the right direction, he said.

“As always, consult your physician to ensure it’s safe for you,” Freeman advised.
