US: Unprecedented Summer Flu Surge Leads to First Pediatric Death

US is experiencing an unprecedented summer surge in flu cases

United States: Influenza, which is also known as flu, is still counted as a large concern as the cases and deaths linked to the infection are still witnessing an increase. Currently, another US state has reported a dealth associated with flu, according to the Maine Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

According to the official reports, a child has lost his life after getting infected with the flu. The death occurred after the child caught Influenza B Victoria. The death was announced on Friday by the CDC via a press release.

The concerns associated with the death are high because it is the first reported pediatric death registered by the agency during the 2023-2024 season. The Maine CDC has highlighted that influenza spreads across the state throughout the year; however, the spread is at its peak between October and mid-May.

Flu and its surprising surge during summers!

The experts have highlighted that flu has its dedicated season, and fever, cough, sore throat, as well as other symptoms during the summer season can be confusing. However, after witnessing a surge in the cases linked to the flu this summer, experts have been asking for regular tests against the flu and COVID.

While addressing the concern, Dr Jordan Wagner stated, “Distinguishing between them can be tricky since they share similar symptoms like fever, cough and fatigue. Diagnostic testing, including rapid flu tests and COVID-19 tests, is probably an individual’s best bet to confirm the specific virus causing the illness. Consulting a health care professional is essential for accurate diagnosis and appropriate management,” according to the reports by USA Today.

What do experts have to say about the surge in flu activities in the summer?

As per the health experts, the answer to the above question is yes. Wagner explained, “Contracting the flu during spring and summer is less common than during the fall and winter.”

However, he also mentioned that it doesn’t mean that the chances for the same are zero.

As per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the United States sees activities linked to flu throughout the season but they are high during the winter season. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the flu activities are unpredictable, according to the health agency.
